Artist In Residence - New York, NY

In 2004, I move to Manhattan to pursue some music opportunities. I was hire to teach full time at The Noel Pointer Foundation. I’d teach in the daytime, and play in the streets of New York at night. I hung out at jazz sots like St. Nicks Pub, Smalls, The Village Vanguard, Minton’s Playhouse and Lenox Lounge. I met so many dope ass musicians that year including Olu Dara (Nas’s father ), saxophonist James Carter and Bill Lee Spike Lee’s father). A lot of my teachers from HSA played at these spots and I would go to listen to them. It was easy for me to bounce around these spots because I was living in Harlem at the time. I live in a brownstone right behind St. Nicks Pub, a two minute walk to the venue. Another one of my teachers from HSA lived a couple doors down and hooked me up with that spot when I told him I wanted to move up there. I was really lucky to be protected and loved by so many musicians. They all looked out for me and blessed me with so many opportunities in the city, no catches! But, I worked my ass off so I deserved every bit and they knew it. They all saw me grow up and improve as a musician, so they naturally wanted to encourage me to keep going.

Noel Pointer Foundation - Brooklyn, NY

The Noel Pointer Foundation was started by Chinita Pointer, wife of jazz violinist Noel Pointer. He was a New York musician who was famous in the Brooklyn Community for his violin playing. When he died she started the foundation in his name. I used to teach with them occasional while I was attending HSA. One of my teachers Nioka Workman (daughter of jazz musician Reggie Workman) brought me in to work with them. The program operated within the New York Public School system during daytime school hours as well as after school. Gwen Dixon was my mentor and she trained me in working with the children. Her sister, cellist Akua Dixon taught with them as well. When I started teaching on my own, I was given 2 public schools of about 40 children. The students were specially selected by their homeroom teachers to take part. They represented the highest achievers within their class. Their parents were so happy my work that after the first year, due to funding, the school was about to end the program but the teachers petitioned for me to stay and we were granted the following academic school year’s funding.

Artist In Residence - Charlotte, NC

In 2008, I moved to Charlotte, NC and began teaching both institutionally and privately. I’ve taught at Music & Arts, The Charlotte, Symphony, Community In Schools and at the Tosco Music Studio. I also subbed with the Gaston and Mecklenburg School System. After a few years, I opened my own music studio on Charlotte’s eastside community.

My teaching studio offers violin and piano lessons for all ages. I also extend opportunities for my students to attend live shows with me to learn the nightlife side of things if hey choose to pursue that path as well.

The Sounds Of Sai Ensemble

Four musicians performing onstage, playing guitar, violin, saxophone, and percussion instruments.

To establish myself within the Charlotte community, I would sit in with various bands at bars and restaurants throughout the city. Eventually, I started booking my own gigs and chose a wide variety of musicians to accompany me collectively known as “Sound Of Sai.” We play live shows, weddings, corporate and public events. My instrumentation ranges from strings, harp, piano, drums, horns, base and percussion. I use players including symphony orchestra players, touring artists, jazz innovators and music educators. Over time, I’ve secured residencies at several venues including Blue Restaurant, Georges Brasserie, Mickey and Mooch, The House of Jazz, The Pewter Rose and Dean and DeLuca.

One of the most gratifying experiences as a musician is to meet the artists and community figures whose work you’ve admired. My covers have been liked and shared by various artists on Facebook, Instagram and X and Tik Tok. And occasionally, some artists will come out after the show and see me playing, say hello or even sometimes join in on a song or two and even tip.
